Tuning your sitting posture
Tuesday

Do's:

1. Sit up straight in your chair at the beginning of the interview, with your back against the back of the chair.
2. Change your sitting position a little during the interview. When someone says something it is good to turn a little with your shoulders towards this person and to lean forward a little. You can emphasize this by tilting your head a little.
3. Let your hands lie loosely on you lap or place them on the arm rest of your chair. From these positions it is also easier to support your words with hand gestures.

Don'ts:
1. Slouch or hang sideways in your chair, it might give the impression that you are not that interested in the job.
2. Sitting on the edge of your chair can come across as being a little tense and might give the impression that you feel uncomfortable.
3. Folding your arms. Though this might give security, it is interpreted to be a defensive or even arrogant pose.

Facial Expressions

During an interview, would you subconsciously do either of the following?

  • Look quizzical during the interview, as if having no idea why you are here
  • Or looked eye-wide and determined to do something but not knowing what
If you walk into the interview room, and looking like that throughout the interview, the only thing you would be getting is the humorous labels the interviews created just for you.

How to improve your facial expressions?

1. Take a good, long, hard look at yourself in the mirror. Look at yourself as others would.
2. Modify your facial expressions -- first eliminate any negative overall characteristics that might exist.
3. Add a simple feature that nearly every interviewee forgets -- A SMILE!
4. Not some stupid Bart Simpson grim, but a true and genuine smile that tells me you are a happy person and delighted to be interviewed.
5. If you relax your inhibitions and allow yourself to respond naturally to your thoughts, attitudes and emotions, your facial expressions will be appropriate and will project sincerity, conviction and credibility.

Eye Contacts
Monday

Throughout history, we've been preoccupied with the eyes and their effect on human behaviour. Eye contact regulates conversation, gives cues of dominance. Eye signals are a vital part of being able to read a person's attitude and thoughts. When people meet for the first time they make a series of quick Judgements about each other, based largely on what they see.

Here's a question. Something when gets excited, will expand up to 4 times it's original size? What is it?
Answer: Pupil.

Yes. When someone becomes excited, their pupils can dilate to up to four times their original size. Conversely, an angry, negative mood causes the pupils to contract to what are commonly known as 'beady little eyes' or 'snake eyes'. Lighter eyes can look more attractive because it's easier to see the dilation taking place.

Ppupil size is affected by one's general state of arousal. It increases when people view something that stimulates them.

The Eyebrow Flash

This gesture is a long-distance 'hello' greeting signal. The eyebrows rise rapidly for a split second and then drop again and its purpose is to draw attention to the face so that clear signals can be exchanged. However it is considered improper or impolite in Japan and has definite sexual connotations.

Gaze Behaviour-Where Do You Look?

Have you ever experienced a talking session with people that make us feel comfortable? What about people who make us feel uneasy? These got to do with the length of time that they look at us or with how long they hold our gaze as they speak.

Most Liars Look You in the Eye

Many people associate lying with looking away. Approximately 30% of the liars constantly looked away when they lie while the other 70% of the liars maintained strong eye contact with their victim, assuming they were less likely to get caught if they did the opposite of what people expected. They were right.

The Sideways Glance

The Sideways Glance is used to communicate interest, uncertainty or hostility. When it is combined with slightly raised eyebrows or a smile, it communicates interest and is frequently used as a courtship signal, mostly by women. If it is clustered with down-turned eyebrows, furrowed brow or the corners of the mouth down-turned, it signals a suspicious, hostile or critical attitude.

How do I do a proper handshake?

Handshakes are a vital component that you need to bring to interpersonal encounter with anyone at anytime.

The History of the handshake
Whenever primitive tribes meet under friendly conditions in the ancient past, they would hold their arms forward and out, gesturing to the opposite mate that no weapons of any kind are being held.
However, in the ancient times, the lower arm grasp handshake is often used as a protection in checking whether the opposite mate carried a concealed dagger in the sleeve.

Things to take note of before and during a handshake

1. Always keep a handkerchief in your pocket at all times so that you can dry your sweaty palms. You wouldn't want to give the first bad impression during an interview just because of your sweaty palms!

2. Do not be shy to offer your handshake. It shows friendliness and acceptance.

3. Extend your right arm if you're a right hander. Slightly angle your arm at your chest lever or keep it vertical.

4. Give a firm handshake which includes: locked hands, thumb joint to thumb joint.

5. Remember to maintain eye contact with the opposite mate when shaking hands. Do not stick your eyes on your hand.

6. Remember not to give the Bone-crusher handshake or the Finger-Tip Grab. You can annoy or irritate the other person once you do this!

7. Pump the other person's hand 3 times and end the handshake.

An example of a handshake with thumbs joint to thumbs joint. Notice the thumbs are placed on both sides, creating a feeling of equality and mutual respect.
( CORRECT WAY )

In this submissive handshake, one thumb is above the other. This is trying to imply that you are in charge of the situation and this sure isn't the appropriate handshake if you are the one going for an scholarship application!
( WRONG WAY )
